“Women’s Agenda for development” Pre-election debates

The aim of these debates were to clarify the attitude of political forces running in the National Assembly Elections towards the issues highlighted in the “Women’s Agenda for Development” document. 

The initiative was undertaken within the framework of the project “EQUAL: Promoting Women's Political Participation at National Level in Armenia funded by the Government Offices of Sweden and implemented by OxYGen Foundation in cooperation with the experts of WomenNet NGO and WomenNet.am website.

Coordination meeting of the NA-CSO cooperation platform

“Women Agenda” stepped into another stage of development after the meeting of the representatives of civil society organizations (CSO’s) and the newly elected members of the National Assembly (NA) in December 2018. Aiming to set a basis for cooperation
between the members of the National Assembly and
the representatives of the civil society organizations
through launching an effective dialogue on equal rights
and equal opportunities for women and men and taking
joint steps to address the issues included in the
“Women’s Agenda for Development” document.

During the meeting it was decided:

  • To form a cooperation platform between the National Assembly and CSOs.
  • To organize public hearings at the National Assembly on the issues included in the Women’s Agenda document on March 8, 2019.

January-March 2019

The survey was conducted among newly elected women MPs, within the framework of “EQUAL: Promoting Women’s Political Participation at National Level in Armenia” Project. The survey aimed to clarify MP's attitude towards women's rights protection issues.

I protected women's rights in the City Council of Yerevan, thus I will protect them in the Parliament as well.

“How many men should be in the National Assembly?”, the question sounds strange, isn’t it? Maybe now, because of existing certain stereotypes in society, there is still a need for gender quotas, however, a consistent approach should be undertaken in this direction to ensure a situation when the quota is not needed.

The National Assembly must picture the structure of the society within the concept of representative democracy. We need to ensure equal representation of women and men in the National Assembly.

Still we are not succeeding in overcoming various stereotypes, to overcome the concept of so called 3 “not to do things: not to be afraid, not to regret, not to be jealous. Not to be afraid to break the stereotypes, to be the first. Not to be jealous… do not regret and constantly refer to the past.

The state also faces problems because of not properly involving women in public life. While neglecting women, it costs quite expensive for the country. We are having great losses due to gender inequality.

“EQUAL” Award Ceremony

7 MPs representing 3 factions of the National Assembly of the 7th convocation received symbolic awards of being “a champion” of the EQUAL campaign. The award was given to Lena Nazaryan, Anna Kostanyan, Arsen Julfalakyan, Gayane Abrahamyan, Shake Isayan, Heriknaz Tigranyan.
