The theme of the International Women’s Day in 2020 – “I Am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights” – was in line with the Generation Equality campaign launched by the UN Women dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action that is viewed as a roadmap for the empowerment of women and girls.
This year is particularly standing out because among other jubilee events the 10th anniversary since the founding of the UN Women will also be celebrated.
The review of the 25 years of implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action shows that despite some progress, real changes have been very slow for the majority of women and girls in the world. Although the world has made unprecedented strides, not a single country has reached gender equality. Many barriers remain unchanged both at the legal and cultural levels. Women and girls continue to be undervalued: they work more and earn less and have fewer options, they survive multiple forms of abuse at home and in society. Moreover, there is a significant threat for the reversal of hard-fought feminist achievements.
2020 has provided a solid opportunity to mobilize global activities to reach gender equality and protect the rights of all women and girls.
It should be noted that within the scope of the International Women’s Day, IWD initiative, the campaign theme for the day was #EachforEqual.
Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world, the IWD initiative stated in its message.
It is noteworthy that the photos accompanying the March 8 theme coincide with the logo and initiative of the Equal Campaign launched jointly by the OxYGen Foundation in collaboration with WomenNet.am and the Family Academy NGO.
